Curated Ocean Discovery Experience
Discover alluring False Bay. Take an enchanting ocean exploration with your family.
Listen to enthralling curation on the bay and the inhabitants thereof whilst hearing the whistling of dolphins, the powerful blow from a whale, visit famous Seal Island, cage dive with sharks, see endangered birds close up, smell the sea breeze……feel the sky. YOU’RE ALIVE!
Situated in the Atlantic Ocean between the mountainous Cape Peninsula and the Hottentots Holland mountains, the mouth of the bay faces south and is demarcated by Cape Point to the west and Cape Hangklip to the east. Bartholomeu Diaz, the first European seafarer anchored off the coast of South Africa, described False Bay as “Gulf between the mountains” in 1488.
A lesser-known fact is that False Bay is the gateway to the Marine Big Five – Seals, Penguins, Sharks Dolphin and Whales.
Itinerary:
Your curated voyage of discovery starts in historical Simon’s Town at our marine centre located in the waterfront. Immediately after a safety briefing, you’ll board our powerful boat together with our trusted crew at Simon’s Town pier.
Your exact discovery route will be determined by your skippers’ understanding and observation of the environment, the marine activity and the ever changing weather patterns on the day and should include:
Boulders Beach – home to the African Penguin. Bordered mainly by indigenous bush above the high-water mark on the one side, and the clear water of False Bay on the other, the area comprises a number of small sheltered bays, partially enclosed by granite boulders that are 540 million years old. The sandy, compact coves with large boulders, offers a home to waddling penguins & their nesting areas. It is one of the few sites where this vulnerable bird can be observed at close range, wandering freely in a protected natural environment. From just two breeding pairs in 1982, the penguin colony has grown to about 3,500 birds in recent years. Experience these delightful birds up close in their very own habitat.
Roman Rock Lighthouse – Built in 1861, it is the only lighthouse in South Africa to be built on a single rock.
Seal Island is Africa’s greatest island bound seal colony and is home to an incredible 64 000 Cape Fur Seals as well as Cape Cormorants, the endangered Bank Cormorant and a wide variety of other seabirds.
The highlight of the trip will include watching different powerful , predatory shark species. Cage diving is an option although the boat based shark viewing is the best!
As we navigate the waters of False bay, it is not uncommon to encounter the most fascinating ocean giants on our planet, whales. These may include Southern Right, Humpback and Bryde’s whales. From June to November, up to 3,500 Southern Right whales mate and give birth along the South African coast.
Pods of wild dolphin are regularly encountered surfing the bow wave or riding the wake of the boat. Their sounds of communication clearly emitting through the boat bringing you closer to nature than ever before.
Your homeward route skirts the small villages that line the shores of False Bay including St James –famous for the Herbert Baker designed houses and Kalk Bay, a traditional fishing village which still retains much of its original character.
